MADRID 17 Nov. () –

The International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA), the nuclear agency linked to the United Nations, confirmed this Sunday that most of the nuclear reactors under the control of the Ukrainian authorities have had to reduce their generation levels after the massive attack carried out. last night by Russia against the energy infrastructure of the entire country.

Only two of these nine reactors currently generate electricity at full capacity, in another six the capacity has been reduced between 40 and 90 percent and the ninth is stopped for maintenance, according to a statement from the director general of the international agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi.

“Nuclear power plants need reliable connections to the electrical grid, both to transmit the electricity they produce and to receive external energy for reactor cooling. The increasing fragility of the grid has been one of the main challenges for nuclear safety throughout the world. armed conflict,” laments the organization.

“At this critical moment, I reiterate the importance of respecting the seven essential pillars for nuclear security during conflict, in particular the fourth pillar, which establishes that there must be a secure supply of energy from the electrical grid to all nuclear facilities,” concludes Grossi.
