The interim prime minister of Bangladesh, Mohamed Yunus, has announced that they will request India to extradite his predecessor in office, Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country after a popular revolt.
“We are going to ensure that there is justice for each of the deaths of the July and August revolution. Efforts are underway to prosecute those responsible and we are going to ask for Hasina’s return to India to hold her accountable,” said Yunus. in a televised speech given on the occasion of the first hundred days of the formation of the interim government.
“It doesn’t matter how powerful the accused are or what party they belong to. There is no option of impunity,” stressed Yunus, who has put the number of cases investigated by the commission created after Hasina’s departure at 1,600, although he has warned that the number total could exceed 3,500.
“The families of many victims are afraid to report,” explained Yunus, who has promised that “no one will harm you.” “Report your cases without hesitation,” he stressed.
There are more than 200 court cases filed against Hasina since she left the country on August 5. She is also being investigated along with 46 other defendants by the International Crimes Tribunal (ITC) of Bangladesh for crimes such as genocide. In addition, the Bangladeshi authorities are in communication with the International Criminal Court and UN Human Rights.
Yunus highlighted in his speech that some 1,500 people died due to the repression of the protests and that another 19,931 were injured. Investigators are working to document each of these cases and launch legal proceedings. “We must all work together to rebuild this nation devastated by the authoritarian government,” Yunus appealed in a message of unity.
