Macron has met with relatives of victims of repression
Nov. 17 () –
The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, received this Sunday at the Casa Rosada, the official headquarters of the Presidency, his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, to the rhythm of the Avenida de las Camelias military march, traditionally linked to the last Argentine military dictatorship .
Milei himself has republished on his account on the social network Macron arrived at the palace accompanied by his wife, Brigitte, while Milei was flanked by his sister, Karina Milei, who is also Secretary General of the Presidency.
Macron highlighted in a message on social networks in Spanish that “we continue working with President Javier Milei.” “We are going to strengthen cooperation between Argentina and France, especially in economy, defense and innovation. Before the G20, the dialogue we maintain is important for the relationship between Europe and Latin America,” he added.
After the greetings and formal photos, both presidents went to Milei’s office to hold a bilateral meeting and a meeting with ministers and the French delegation.
Previously, Macron and his wife visited the Church of the Holy Cross in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of San Cristóbal to pay tribute to twenty French people who disappeared and were murdered during the last Argentine military dictatorship, among them the nuns Alice Domon and Léonie Duquet.
The parish is emblematic because there the infiltrated repressor Alfredo Astiz designated the French nuns and the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo to be kidnapped, taken to the Navy Mechanics School (ESMA) and thrown alive into the sea.
On July 11, deputies from La Libertad Avanza, Milei’s party, visited Astiz in prison and took photos with him and other convicted criminals of the dictatorship, which provoked criticism in France.
“CONNECT TO MILEI”
According to the Elysée, the objective of Macron’s visit is to try to “connect President Milei with the priorities of the G20”, a forum in which both leaders will participate on Monday and Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro.
“We don’t always think the same about many topics, but it is very useful to debate,” Macron said Saturday in a video recorded on his plane and posted on TikTok.
During his tour of Latin America, which will also take Macron to Chile, he will explain to the Mercosur countries why he opposes the signing of a free trade agreement between this regional bloc and the European Union.
Among the main detractors of this treaty that the European Commission hopes to sign at the end of the year are French farmers, who fear competition from products that are not subject to the strict environmental and health standards in force in Europe.
At the meeting, Macron will also try to deepen economic relations with Argentina, especially in the field of critical metals, since the Eramet mining group has just inaugurated a lithium mine in the Argentine province of Salta.
Macron is also expected to try to advance the possible sale of the French Scorpène submarines, although the French Presidency relativizes the status of the negotiations.
