Dina Boluarte and Xi Jinping inaugurate the Peruvian megaport of Chancay

( Spanish) – During a ceremony at the Government Palace of Peru, the country’s president Dina Boluarte and her Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, declared the Chancay megaport, in Peru, inaugurated this Thursday, a work that seeks to speed up trade between America and Asia. according to both governments. The port will begin operations in early 2025.

60% of the megaport is owned by the company Cosco Shipping Ports Limited, of which the Chinese State is the majority shareholder, while the remaining 40% belongs to the Peruvian company Inversiones Portuarias Chancay. Its initial investment was US$1.3 billion, although it is estimated that it could reach US$4 billion.

During the inauguration, the president of China said that the objective of the work is to generate “important contributions for greater connectivity between South America and China.”

Meanwhile, Boluarte pointed out that this megaport and other works – such as the expansion of the Jorge Chávez Airport and the construction of more railway infrastructure – seek to make Peru a “key player” in global trade.

Before the ceremony, both leaders met privately at the Government Palace of Peru. Xi Jinping arrived in the South American country this Thursday to participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which is also attended by the leaders of Australia, Malaysia, South Korea and the United States. among other countries. The APEC summit will conclude on Saturday.
