The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned the controversial statements by the Israeli Minister of Finance, the far-right Belazel Smotrich, at the beginning of the week regarding a possible recognition by President-elect Donald Trump of Israeli “sovereignty” of the West Bank.
In a statement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei described Smotrich’s words as “another clear sign of the racist nature, expansionist character and aggressive approach” of Israel, denouncing that its birth is based on “continued usurpation of Palestinian lands and the killing and forcible displacement of Palestinians.”
Baghaei has considered that the Israeli settlement policy “is part of the plan to commit genocide and annihilation” of the Palestinians, which he has also described as a policy of the Israeli State to “humiliate and weaken the United Nations, its norms and its institutions.” .
“An entity that does not believe in the principles and norms of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations (…) does not have the right to be a member of this international organization,” he noted.
Along these lines, he has regretted that the United States and Germany “obstruct” the processes against the leaders of Israel, therefore preventing them from being held accountable before international courts.
For this reason, he has reiterated his request for “decisive action” from the international community and the UN Security Council to “stop the genocide in Palestine” and the “creation of wars” in Lebanon and the rest of the Middle East.
The Iranian authorities thus join the Palestinian Authority, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the European Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which includes 56 states, and among others the governments of Saudi Arabia, Egypt , United Arab Emirates, Spain, Qatar and Turkey, which disapproved of Smotrich’s statements.
Israeli Minister Smotrich affirmed this Monday that the election of Trump as the new head of the White House represents an “important opportunity” for Israel to gain “sovereignty” of the West Bank. “We are one step away from obtaining sovereignty in the settlements of Judea and Samaria – the biblical name for the West Bank – and now is the time to give it,” the far-right politician said then. The minister has even set 2025 as the date for this milestone, which would imply consolidating the current occupation.
