It was the hit before Christmas.
Soccer star-turned-commentator Jason Kelce stole the “Queen of Christmas” crown from Mariah Carey, at least for one week, when he scored No. 1 on the iTunes Christmas songs chart.
“Maybe this Christmas” —Kelce’s new duet with Stevie Nicks—dominates the Top 100 Christmas Songs over Carey’s seasonal juggernaut, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which came in at No. 2.
Kelce, 37, addressed his big score in the latest episode of his Podcast “New Heights” with his younger brother, Travis Kelce, 35.
When the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, and Taylor Swift’s main teammate, asked about his brother’s achievement on the charts, Jason jokingly responded: “You know, I’ve fought my whole life to be the Queen of “Christmas and the fact that we’re finally here… it’s really special.”
However, Jason knows it’s too early in the holiday season to write off Carey’s classic. that turned
30 October 29.
“I know we caught it in early November,” he said. “We’ll see if it holds up for the rest of Christmas.”
The former Philadelphia Eagles center continued: “We kind of caught it in the Christmas fall. “Not a lot of people listen to Christmas music, so we threw ourselves in there.”
But he added: “I’ll take it where I can get it. “It’s pretty amazing.”
“Maybe This Christmas,” a cover of Ron Sexsmith’s 2002 song, is the second song released from the upcoming holiday album “A Philly Special Christmas Party.”
Jason’s third and final LP Philly Specialty Trio featuring former Eagles teammates Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, arrives on November 22 and will once again benefit Philadelphia-area charities.
After Jason and Travis performed with Boyz II Men on “It’s Christmas (in Cleveland Heights)” – the first single from the album – Jason teamed up with Swift’s friend Nicks. for “Maybe this Christmas.”
Jason called the experience “unbelievable” and said, “I mean, obviously I’m still in awe of the fact that that actually happened.”
It’s a bit of a shock that Jason hasn’t bounced back after previously talking about the collaboration on the podcast in October.
“[It’s] “It’s crazy to be on a track with Stevie Nicks,” he said last month. “I mean, absolutely unreal… The fact that I’m singing with her, this legend, is pretty unreal.”
In their brotherly banter, Travis kept Jason in check on this week’s podcast, noting that he shouldn’t be given “too much credit” for Nicks’ legendary involvement.
“That’s exactly right,” Jason laughed. “Good point!”
In fact, Jason admitted, “There is no percent chance that any song I’m on is going to be number one streaming on any service, in any genre.”
And let’s face it: Carey and “All I Want for Christmas is You” aren’t going anywhere.
The 55-year-old diva launched it Mariah Carey’s Christmas tour in California last week and will hit the New York area with shows at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, the UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York, and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on December 13, 15 and 17, respectively.
