White sand beaches, views of the Atlantic Ocean and lots of skin: this is the Pirelli 2025 Calendar.
The latest edition of “The Cal”, published annually by the Italian tire manufacturer as an exclusive benefit for its customers, features a wide variety of stars from the worlds of television, film, music and fashion. In recent years, industry titans such as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss have appeared in its pages, photographed by renowned photographers Terence Donovan, Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts.
For the latest edition, New York photographer Ethan James Green turns his lens to Hunter Schafer, John Boyega and Simone Ashley, along with model and illustrator Connie Fleming, artist Martine Gutiérrez and model Jenny Shimizu, among others. Titled “Update and Reveal”, number 51 on the calendar. The entrance puts the flesh in focus, with the cast appearing in various states of undress.
Photographed both on land and at sea, models use accessories collected from the beach to cover their modesty, appearing in both black and white and serene hues. The calendar is very far from Last year’s “Timeless” theme. – changing the bold range of colors for a calmer palette.
Shot in Miami, “Refresh and Reveal” is, as its name suggests, an “update” of the calendar’s origins in 1964, when British photographer Robert Freeman headed to the beaches of Mallorca, Spain, to take portraits of the models. Jane Lumb. and Sonny Drane. “Reveal” is, of course, an ode to the scantily clad nature of its subjects.
“There’s really no way we can be more truthful than if we were naked,” Green told celebrity.land.
For Green, who rose to fame with intimate black-and-white portraits of New York youth and whose clients include Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and iD, the casting process was simple. She reached out to previous collaborators, including Fleming, Gutierrez and Schafer, the latter of whom she first photographed for Teen Vogue in 2017. Tonne Goodman, former fashion director of American Vogue, also served as fashion director and creative consultant on the project .
In the calendar, Green also does double duty as a model, making this the third time a calendar photographer has appeared in the cast. It seems fitting: Green started out as a model, which also influenced how she approached this shoot.
“Being on the other side of the camera… you’re in a very vulnerable place, especially if you’re showing a lot of skin,” she said. “So being able to make people feel comfortable was essential for this project. “I would say modeling when I was younger was a good way to learn that.”
Green and his team also found themselves prepared for the elements while filming in Miami during May and June, alternating between shooting in Virginia Beach Park and in a studio. “We ran out when it was sunny and took studio photos when it rained,” Green recalled. “The studio started to float (flood) because it was raining a lot… we had to evacuate.”
Collaboration was key for the 2025 calendar, Green said. “Everyone had their own approach,” he added of the models, consultants and calendar organizers. “You would go on this journey looking at the clothes, or lack of clothes, seeing what people wanted to do and what their Pirelli experience should be,” he said.
While Green’s style has evolved over the years, he says his approach has always been the same. “I have always been very collaborative, which has always led me to the film.”
