The best ‘making of’ in history: this version of ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ on Disney+ is the entire movie without effects

The chaotic chronology of all the 'Planet of the Apes' movies: in what order to watch them

It is, possibly, one of the most brutal and unusual exercises in documenting how a film has been made that has ever been seen. On Disney+, in the extras category of ‘kingdom of the planet of the apes‘ you have a version of the film that includes its entire footage without effects, playable simultaneously with the final version of the film. A deep (and somewhat disturbing) dive into the very complex process of creating CGI effects, and one that makes it clear that this latest iteration of the franchise is more than just ‘computer apes’.

From the beginning of this new batch of ‘Planet of the Apes’ films, the special effects surprised viewers with the expressiveness and, despite the contradiction, the humanity that the primates breathed. But this is the only time we can see the work of the actors from beginning to end in a filmappreciating not only the incredible work of transformation and character creation that the digital effects team has carried out, but also the task of composing new creatures and all the nuances of the actors’ interpretation, buried under the complex capture equipment of movements.

In this new installment we move to several generations after what we saw in the previous trilogy and the reign of Caesar. Now the apes are the dominant species that live in peace and without conflict, and humans do so in their shadow. But a new, despotic ape leader wants to build a new empire, while a young ape begins a journey of discovery about the common past between apes and humans.

This montage was born as a project by director Wes Ball to include in the Blu-Ray editions of the movie. This has happened with some special editions outside of Spain, but not here, so this extra on Disney+ is the only way to get this montage with Spanish subtitles (although not dubbed, for obvious reasons). A gift for fans that renews the spectacular nature of the films, now much more notable for all the work that this montage shows behind them.
