The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed this Tuesday the nomination of former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee as the next ambassador to Israel, a key diplomatic position taking into account regional tensions and the different fronts open for the Israeli Army.
“Mike has been a great public servant, governor and religious leader for many years,” Trump said in a statement on his profile on the Truth Social social network, where he assured that Huckabee “loves Israel and the people of Israel and that” will work tirelessly to achieve peace in the Middle East.”
Kuckabee was governor of Arkansas between 1996 and 2007 in two full terms after the resignation of fellow Republican Jim Guy Tucker in 2007. After exhausting his terms as governor, he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primaries for the White House in 2008 and 2016. when Trump first won.
The former governor has spoken out in recent months regarding the war in the Middle East and has defended positions against the ceasefire as a bargaining chip to facilitate negotiations with Hamas, since he believes that dialogue should not be entered into with a terrorist group and advocates for its total elimination.
Previously, the American press suggested that Trump could have offered him this same position during his first term (2017-2021), although Huckabee himself denied the reports. His daughter and current governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, was a White House spokeswoman for two years between 2017 and 2019.
