Scholz now opens to negotiating the date of the vote of confidence in Parliament

BUDAPEST Nov. 8 () –

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has shown himself willing to negotiate the date on which his Government will submit to a motion of confidence in Parliament, a vote that he initially established for mid-January and which, barring surprise, will result in the call for early elections.

When announcing the departure of the Liberals from the coalition last Wednesday, Scholz also confirmed that he would submit to a vote of confidence on January 15, which would imply new elections in March. The main opposition leader, Friedrich Merz, has demanded that the parliamentary process be resolved immediately and that there could be elections at the beginning of 2025.

Scholz initially ruled out changing the calendar, but this Friday, at the end of the informal European Council held in Budapest, he was not so firm. Thus, he has raised the possibility that the groups represented in the Bundestag could reach some type of agreement, for which he has appealed for “calm.”

However, he has slipped that within this agreement there are a series of laws that, in his opinion, must go forward this year, a point that he already conveyed on Thursday in a face-to-face meeting in Berlin with Merz that ended without any kind. of practical progress.

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) insisted this Friday that the elections must be held as soon as possible, since otherwise is “irresponsible.” Merz is already the official candidate of the conservative bloc for the Chancellery and appears as a favorite in voting intention, which is why he believes that Scholz is putting the interests of his party before those of the country.
