President Joe Biden will become the first US president to visit the Amazon rainforest when he travels to Brazil this month as part of a six-day tour of Latin America to attend a pair of international summits, the White House said Thursday.
Biden will begin his trip with a visit to Lima, where he will meet with President Dina Boluarte and attend the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, from November 14 to 16. From there, it will travel to Manaus and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 17 to 19.
In Manaus, Biden will visit the Amazon rainforest and hold a meeting with local and indigenous leaders working to preserve the region, in what represents the first visit of its kind for a United States president. In Rio, Biden will meet with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to promote workers’ rights and sustainable economic growth, the White House reported. He will also attend the G20 summit to discuss global challenges such as hunger, poverty and climate change.
Hours earlier on Thursday, Biden held a phone call with Lula to discuss the upcoming G20 summit. It could also have been an opportunity for Biden to share experiences with a president like his ideas.
The leftist Lula made clear his preference for Democrat Kamala Harris before the elections in the United States. Lula defeated former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, known as the “Trump of the Tropics,” in 2022.
Biden is in the final months of his presidency and in January he will hand over the reins of government to Republican Donald Trump. The two summits will offer Biden one of his last opportunities as president to meet with heads of state with whom he has worked over the years.
