The United Nations considers it “essential” to receive the express commitment of Russia and Ukraine that serves to stop any military activity in the surroundings of the Ukrainian nuclear plant in Zaporizhia and that it continue to function safely, the Assistant Secretary General for Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday. In a session of Security Council Dedicated to threats to international peace and security, Rosemary Dicarlo pointed out that the United Nations continues to be seriously concerned about the dangerous situation at the nuclear power plant and that, instead of seeing a decrease in tensions, it receives daily alarming reports related to the plant.
Dicarlo appealed to “common sense” to prevent any action from endangering the physical integrity, safety or protection of the plant.
“As emphasized by General secretary at his briefing yesterday in the Council, the commitment to dialogue and results must be applied to the critical situation at the plant. If these types of incidents continue to increase, we could face a catastrophe”, he highlighted.

To avoid this, he indicated that the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency renewed its request on Tuesday to send a mission that would conduct essential security and safety activities on the site.
He explained that preparations for the mission “are underway” and that the Agency maintains “active consultations” with all parties to send said mission as soon as possible.
He reiterated that the United Nations continues to fully support the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency and its efforts to ensure the safe operation of the plant and other nuclear facilities in Ukraine.
For this reason, he urged the parties to provide immediate, safe and unrestricted access to the site and recalled the urgent need to re-establish the Zaporizhia plant as a purely civilian infrastructure and guarantee the security of the area.
“We must be clear that any possible damage to Zaporizhia, or to any other nuclear facility in Ukraine, leading to a possible nuclear incident would have catastrophic consequences, not only for the immediate vicinity, but for the region and beyond,” he stressed.
Similarly, he stressed that any damage that leads to the disconnection of the plant from the Ukrainian power grid it would have disastrous humanitarian implications, especially with the onset of winter.
“As the Secretary General has made clear, the electricity produced at the Zaporizhia plant belongs to Ukraine,” Dicarlo stressed.
In their respective interventions before the Security Council, the representatives of Russia and Ukraine accused each other of the bombing in the vicinity of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant.
