Recently Quentin Tarantino took advantage of his time on a podcast to slam Hollywood and its worrying lack of creativity. When asked about one of the latest science fiction successes, the sole of Dune, He complained about only seeing “one remake after another”. Well, once again the film industry has proven him right.
In this case, the return of one of the best science fiction films of the 80s has been confirmed, which in turn was based on a classic from 1958. Only this time, its new managers are going to have a much greater challenge than with Dune: Overcoming the result achieved in the last one will not be easy, nor will it be easy to give a new focus to the story.
One of the great science fiction classics of the 80s returns
As confirmed by the media deadline, a remake of is already being prepared The Fly. A true horror and science fiction myth from classic Hollywood, which director David Cronenberg managed to turn into a cult film, faithful to his style. The terror of the flesh took on a new dimension, supported by surprising special effects for its time.
In both cases the story was the same: the brilliant and tormented scientist Seth Brundle is working on a revolutionary project about teleportation, looking for a way to send objects instantly from one place to another. Only when the time comes to test his machine on himself, a fly sneaks into one of his cabins, starting disaster.
This causes a genetic fusion between Brundle and the insect, triggering a terrifying transformation. At first, Brundle feels energized and becomes stronger (almost in true Spider-Man style), but as time goes by, he begins to undergo physical and mental changes that turn him into a grotesque creature. A very different mutation from that of the comics.
In case the vision of David Cronenberg did not fit perfectly with the plot of the 1986 remake, the producers made sure to have a luxury cast, with actors who were in their prime at that time, such as Jeff Goldblum (who shortly after would sweep his role as Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park) and actress Geena Davies.
A new remake of The Fly
So far, there is not much information about the new remake of The flyregardless of who will be behind the cameras this time. It will be none other than Nikyatu Jusu, a filmmaker known primarily for her directorial work on The nanny (Nanny). Until now, no further clues have been given about the cast or the focus of the film.
What is clear is that surpassing the work carried out in his day by David Cronenberg will not be an easy task. And I hope the luck of the recent one does not continue The crow and other failed remakes.
