“Once again, Washington’s rhetoric demonstrates a desire to pass the problems of a sick person to a healthy person. The biased statements by the United States about electoral processes abroad are only proof of its double standards and its attitude disdainful about democratic values,” he added.
Shortly before, the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, had congratulated Sandu for his “historic success” in achieving re-election by winning the second round of the presidential elections, while applauding his “commitment to democracy.” by the population of the European country.
“The United States extends its deep congratulations to Maia Sandu on her re-election as president of Moldova. Sandu is the first Moldovan president to win a second term in a popular vote, which is a historic success,” Blinken said.
“We congratulate the people of Moldova for their commitment to a democracy that reflects the popular will and for protecting their elections in the face of an unprecedented level of interference by the Kremlin,” he stressed, before delving into the fact that “the Moldovan people have spoken.” .
Thus, he indicated that the Moldovan population has shown at the polls “its intention to continue forging a European and democratic path”, while insisting that “their level of participation in these elections reflects this commitment.”
“Moldova won and the Kremlin’s attempts to subvert the will of the Moldovan people failed. We stand with the people of Moldova as they continue to chart their democratic, prosperous and European future,” concluded the US Secretary of State, head of diplomacy for the North American country.
During the day on Monday, US President Joe Biden had accused Russia of having been trying for “months” to “undermine Moldova’s democratic institutions and its internal election processes.” “But Russia has failed,” he said, before defending that the Moldovan people have “exercised their democratic right to choose their own future.”
The candidate of the liberal and pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won the second round of the presidential elections with 50.66 percent of the votes, thus beating the candidate of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Alexandr Stoianoglo, considered close to Russia, which achieved 49.43 percent support.
During the voting in the first round of the presidential elections, the Moldovan population also approved – although by a narrow margin of votes – the referendum on European integration.
