Bad Bunny shares emotional video from Puerto Rico after a comedian’s offensive remarks at Trump’s rally

( Spanish) – The singer Bad Bunny published on Tuesday a video with the description he titled Garbage (garbage in English) in what appears to be an allusion to the “floating island of garbage” comments made on Sunday by a comedian invited to a rally by former President Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York.

This is a video that introduces a series of concerts by the singer, held at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on December 10 and 11, 2021. As clarified at the beginning of the clip, it is the first time that published since then.

“This is the chronicle of a star that jumped from the bottom of a great volcano, under the sea, towards another galaxy. It is the chronicle of a legend that represents what is in these latitudes. From up there, celestial entities painted an archipelago down here,” a narrator is heard saying.

The clip that he shared with his more than 45 million followers on Instagram has images of Puerto Rico, reviews the history of the island and shows relevant figures from entertainment, sports and politics, such as Roberto Clemente, Miriam Colón, Sonia SotomayorRicky Martin, Benicio del Toro, Lin Manuel Miranda and even Bad Bunny himself, among many others.

“Here we have the skirt and pants on properly,” the video says. In another section you also hear phrases like “we are kings, queens, champions…” “This is the legendary archipelago to which you belong, that is what you are.”

And in the end, the video includes a written message which bears the signature of the singer, Benito Antonio Martínez. “We have been fighting since day one of our existence, we are the definition of heart and resistance, we are still here, here we are, and for those who forget who we are, calm down, we proudly remind you.”

Comments made by Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian and podcast host, sparked outrage from various quarters.

Trump’s team has said the comments about Puerto Rico did not reflect Trump’s views or those of his campaign. And Donald Trump himself claimed not to know the comedian nor to have heard the comments, which caused a widespread reaction.

In the midst of these reactions, Bad Bunny had given a first sign of support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s electoral campaign. The Puerto Rican star shared a clip on social media on Sunday of the vice president’s plans for the island.

“I will never forget what Donald Trump did and did not do when Puerto Rico needed a competent and supportive leader,” Harris says in the video, which Bad Bunny shared several times focusing on Trump. “He abandoned the island, tried to block aid after two consecutive devastating hurricanes, and offered nothing but paper towels and insults.”

Thousands of people died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria in 2017, shortly after Hurricane Irma caused massive power outages across the island. While assessing damage in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, then-President Trump came under fire for dumping supplies, including paper towels, on the island’s residents.

A representative for Bad Bunny told on Monday that “Benito’s political focus has always been on Puerto Rico.”

His representative did not indicate whether the musician would give a formal endorsement before the elections.
