Recent clashes in the area threaten to reactivate the bloody Las Anod conflict

Nov. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The so-called Provisional Administration of Khaatumo, in northern Somalia, has denounced an attack by Somaliland state forces against its military positions in what threatens to reactivate a historical conflict that had been under relative calm for some months.

The conflict pits the authorities of Somaliland, a self-proclaimed independent republic that is not recognized by any country in the world, with tribal groups from the Sool region that have declared their allegiance to the Government of Somalia. The regional capital, Las Anod, became the epicenter of a conflict in 2023 that left more than 350 dead, about 600 injured and more than 200,000 displaced.

The most representative entity of these groups is the so-called Unity and Salvation Authority of the regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn – Khaatumo (SSC-Khaatumo), which the Somali Government recognizes as a legitimate authority.

Specifically, this administration has accused Somaliland forces of launching the attack against its military positions in the municipality of Buhodle, where Somaliland forces also attacked “military bases and nomadic communities alike, endangering military and civilians alike.” .

“The leadership of the SSC-Khaatumo condemns this attack as an act of terrorism designed to destabilize peace in the region,” according to the statement collected by the news portal Hiraan on Line.

“This aggression demonstrates a flagrant disregard for stability and we reiterate our commitment to defend the territory” after an attack that follows similar altercations that occurred on Thursday and Friday around the municipality.

Hiraan On Line sources assure that these combats have left a high number of fatalities but there is no way to independently verify this estimate.
