MADRID Nov. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Friday a one-year extension of the declaration of national emergency regarding Iran, given the absence of an improvement in relations between both countries, in an international context marked by the escalation of tensions in the Middle East following the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023 and the Israeli offensive launched in response on the Gaza Strip.
“Our relations with Iran have not yet been normalized, and the process of implementing the agreements with Iran, dated January 19, 1981, is ongoing. For this reason, the national emergency declared on November 14, 1979 (. ..) must continue in force beyond November 14, 2024,” reads a statement published by the White House.
Thus, Biden has confirmed – in accordance with the national emergencies law – the extension of the national emergency in relation to Tehran for one year.
This action, the aforementioned note states, is part of a set of measures implemented in order to “confront the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States constituted by the situation” in this country.
Instability in Iran has been increasing in recent months, within the framework of a general increase in tension in the region and, in particular due to its recent confrontations with Israel. Last Saturday, the Israeli Army carried out a series of bombings against Tehran – which resulted in the death of four soldiers and a civilian – within the framework of an operation that it presented as a response to the Iranian air attacks launched against the country on October 1, in which nearly 180 ballistic missiles were fired.
The Iranian attacks on Israel were described by Tehran as a response to the deaths of several leaders of armed groups allied to Tehran in the region. The Israeli Army confirmed that several of its air bases were hit, although it denied significant damage and refused to give details on the percentage of interceptions.
