The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive in Peru on November 14 to pay a state visit to Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and will “virtually” inaugurate a port of Chinese state capitals, located 60 kilometers north of Lime.
In a nighttime interview with local television station N, Peruvian Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer said that the inauguration of the port located in the town of Chancay will be carried out “virtually” from the government palace in Lima and indicated that from that day on the port will begin ” to work.”
“President Boluarte with President Xi Jinping are going to be in the Government Palace with a large group of Peruvians and Chinese citizens. They are not going to be in Chancay for security reasons of the Chinese president himself,” Schialer said and did not specify to whom kind of security reasons he was referring to.
The AP asked the Peruvian Foreign Ministry what type of security reasons it was referring to and also asked the Chinese embassy in Peru for comments, without yet receiving a response from any of them.
Large Chinese delegation
Foreign Minister Schialer added during the interview that “between 200 and 300 Chinese officials will be at the port of Chancay at the inauguration itself” and that the ceremony will take place in the afternoon.
Schialer added that the Chinese president will arrive in Peru on November 14 and will begin a state visit that same day and on November 15 he will join the Leaders’ Week meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC). acronym in English) that runs from November 9 to 16.
The port of Chancay, located 60 kilometers from Lima, on the central Pacific coast and operated by the Chinese state-owned COSCO Shipping, was built to withstand 8.5 magnitude earthquakes. In addition, it will shorten by 10 days the trips with merchandise from South America to China, which now last 45 days, as it will allow the departure of direct transfers from Peru.
Greater Chinese investment
The port of Chancay, where COSCO Shipping has a 60% stake, while the Peruvian Volcan has a 40% stake, has an initial investment of 1.3 billion dollars, will have four berths for ships, 1,500 meters of docks and a 2.7-kilometer breakwater. to achieve safe anchoring of ships.
Various urban transport unions have announced protests in Lima on November 13, 14 and 15 against the Boluarte government and against Parliament for not adopting effective measures to end the increase in crime, especially extortion.
Lima has endured three widespread transportation shutdowns since the end of September and also several anti-government demonstrations by motorcycle taxi drivers, army graduates, teachers and public workers.
Boluarte has just 4% approval and 92% unpopularity, while Congress has 6% approval and 88% unpopularity, according to an October national survey by the firm Ipsos Peru published by television station América, carried out among 1,211 people and with a margin of error of 2.8 points.
