Lula suggests a new referendum to decide the status of the regions occupied by Russia in Ukraine

MADRID Nov. 1 () –

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, proposed this Friday the possibility of holding a new referendum on the status of the regions occupied by Russia in Ukraine. “It would be much simpler, fairer and more democratic to let the people decide,” the president said.

“Russia says that the territories they have occupied are Russian and Ukraine says they are theirs. Why, instead, is there not a referendum held to find out who the people want to stay with?” the Brazilian president asked. .

However, in September 2022, Russia already held consultations in the regions it had occupied during the conflict, Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which all make up 15 percent of Ukrainian territory. The results, favorable to annexation to Russia, were not recognized internationally.

Lula considers that one of the main problems of the conflict is the lack of dialogue between the parties and has valued the willingness of China and Brazil to mediate in possible peace negotiations, but has ruled out that the G20 summit held within A couple of weeks in Rio de Janeiro is the ideal setting for this.

“It is not going to be in the G20 where this is going to be discussed (…) we want to discuss other things that are important for humanity and not transform the G20 into a discussion about war, be it that of Israel, or that of Ukraine and Russia,” he said.

Lula has once again stressed the need to reform and strengthen other international forums, such as the United Nations, whom he has appealed to participate with greater intensity in the conflict, reproaching at the same time the growing lack of credibility and power of the Security Council. .
