The training was inaugurated by Silvia Saravia Matus, ECLAC Officer in charge of water issues on October 25. Here the centrality of water as a key resource for development, the environment and public health in Latin America and the Caribbean was highlighted, and the official underlined the need to strengthen water governance in the region. Among the participants of the event were representatives of the INDRHI and Mr. Saldaña, who offered a perspective on the specific challenges in the Dominican Republic.
The session was divided into several thematic interventions. Natalia Sarmanto, ECLAC Water Resources Expert, opened the dialogue with an analysis of the current panorama of water resources in the region and the gaps in governance necessary to comply with SDG 6. She was followed by the ECLAC Water Resources Expert, Lisbeth Naranjo, who shared recommendations to overcome these challenges, focusing on the implementation of investment policies and institutional strengthening.
One of the main topics was the approach of the “Water-Energy-Food Nexus,” presented by Alba Llavona, ECLAC Water Resources Expert. This approach provides a valuable tool to coordinate intersectoral policies and promote sustainable and efficient water management. Attendees were invited to actively participate, sharing their experiences and perspectives on water governance in their respective contexts.
The session concluded with a closing message, in which the organizers announced future training and on-site technical assistance that will be carried out in 2025 in the Dominican Republic, focused on the circular economy applied to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
