MADRID Nov. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United States Government has urged China this Thursday to release “immediately and unconditionally” the lawyer and activist Yu Wensheng and his wife Xu Yan, recently sentenced to prison for allegedly “inciting the subversion of state power.”
The spokesman for the US State Department, Matthew Miller, has stated that the sentences against Yu and Xu “demonstrate their continued efforts to silence those who speak out in favor of Human Rights and the rule of law”, while he has once again called for the release of “all people unjustly detained and imprisoned.”
Likewise, he has denounced that the authorities prohibited the attendance of diplomats from several foreign missions, including the United States, during the trials of both, “undermining the transparency that is fundamental” to guarantee respect for the right of both to a fair trial.
The Chinese Justice sentenced Yu to three years in prison and Xu to one year and nine months on Tuesday. Both were detained on April 13, 2023 while on their way to the European Union delegation in the Chinese capital, Beijing, to meet with senior officials of the European External Action Service.
