MADRID 31 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned this Thursday the latest launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea and has once again asked the parties for restraint in the face of a situation that he said is “worrying.”
Guterres has taken the opportunity to remember that this type of launches constitute a “violation of the resolutions approved by the UN Security Council” against Pyongyang, which continues with its ballistic and nuclear program despite the measures taken at the international level.
“North Korea continues to launch missiles using technology that clearly violates relevant resolutions,” he said in a statement in which he noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula has continued to worsen.
That is why he has called on the parties to achieve a reduction in tension, respect UN resolutions and achieve an atmosphere conducive to dialogue, which must “be resumed as soon as possible.” “Engagement at the diplomatic level is the only way to achieve sustainable peace and the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has described the launch as “an appropriate military action” amid rising tensions with South Korea and accusations about the alleged deployment of North Korean soldiers to Russia.
Tensions have been rising on the Korean Peninsula for months, marked by North Korea sending hundreds of garbage balloons across the border. In June, Seoul also resumed propaganda broadcasts through loudspeakers on the border for the first time in six years, as well as its live-fire maneuvers near the demarcation line, activities to which are added joint military maneuvers with the United States.
