Israel creates a division in charge of security on the border with Jordan

The Israeli authorities have reported this Wednesday of the creation of a new Eastern Division that will operate under the orders of the Central Command of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and whose main mission will be to guarantee the defense and security of the country in the eastern border with Jordan.

This new division has been approved by the Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, and by the Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, after an evaluation of “the operational needs and defense capabilities in the region,” as detailed by the IDF.

The Israeli Army has taken into account for this evaluation “the lessons of the war and the assessment of the situation.” Israeli authorities have stressed that the division will be in charge of security around Highway 90, which runs from the north to the south of the country parallel to the border with Jordan.

“The mission of the division is to strengthen defense in the border area, Highway 90 and settlements, and respond to terrorist incidents and weapons smuggling, while maintaining a peaceful border and strengthening cooperation with the Jordanian Army,” the IDF has pointed out.

Lieutenant General Halevi has celebrated that this new division will serve to satisfy one of the needs that the Army had already identified even before the attacks by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7, 2023 and the resulting war escalation at the regional level. .

“Strengthening the defense of the borders in general, and the eastern border in particular, was set as an objective before the war, and in the wake of October 7 and recent events, it is gaining renewed relevance,” said the chief. of the Israeli General Staff.
