High-level Side Event of the UN Regional Commissions in the #cop16colombia of the CBD – Message from the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs.
Cali, Colombia, October 29, 2024.
Latin America and the Caribbean is recognized for its enormous biocultural wealth. Biodiversity and its ecosystem services support the livelihoods of millions of people and the economic and social development of many countries and territories.
However, in our region, the environmental pressure caused by the unsustainable use of natural resources has caused reduced productivity and numerous conflicts.
It is therefore crucial to improve our understanding of how biodiversity can contribute to structural change and development.
Our biocultural heritage has great potential to transform development patterns by incorporating the principles of sustainability and equity, in synergy with the 2030 Agenda.
