The Social Democratic Party wins the elections in Lithuania

The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (PSDL) has been the winner of the elections in Lithuania after the second round of the elections held this Sunday and will control 52 of the 141 seats that make up the unicameral Parliament of the Baltic country.

The conservative Union for the Fatherland-Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party will have 28 representatives, while the nationalist Nemunas Dawn party will have 20 seats.

Behind them are the Democratic Union for Lithuania with 14 seats, the Liberal Movement (12 seats), the Union of Farmers and Ecologists of Lithuania (8 seats) and Poles of Lithuania-Union of Christian Families (3 deputies). National Unification and Freedom and Justice will have one representative each and there are two independents. Participation has been 41 percent.

“The election results show that the people of Lithuania, no matter where they live, in cities, towns or villages, want change. They need a totally different government,” said the social democratic leader, Vilija Blinkeviciute.

The poor results of the two liberal partners of the PSDL suggest that the social democratic formation will look for new allies in the center-left.
