MADRID 27 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Philippine authorities have raised the death toll this Sunday to 90 due to the impact of tropical storm ‘Kristine’, although they expect this toll to continue increasing given that 41 people have been reported missing and 71 have been injured.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has published this report, attributing most of the deaths to landslides and floods, which have left entire towns completely flooded.
In addition, dozens of vehicles have suffered damage due to the release of volcanic sediments, which is why 21 roads have been closed to traffic.
For its part, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has announced that 158 localities have been declared in a “state of calamity” due to the effects of the aforementioned meteorological episode. Among these is Batangas, where 54 people died, 18 were injured and 21 disappeared, according to reports this Saturday from the Police collected by the GMA NEWS network.
Around 1.4 million families – or 5.7 million people – have been affected by ‘Kristine’ throughout the archipelago, forcing more than 560,000 to seek refuge, according to figures from the news portal Filipino Inquirer.
Philippine authorities have delivered more than 405,000 food packages and 10,800 non-food products to local entities for distribution to those affected. In addition, as stated in the aforementioned portal, they have allocated 1.5 million Philippine pesos (about 24,000 euros) for residents of the towns hardest hit by the tropical storm, especially in the regions of Bicol and Calabarzon.
