MADRID 26 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has received a contribution of 25 million dollars (about 23 million euros) from Saudi Arabia to “continue its humanitarian operations in Yemen throughout next year.”
The agreement was signed this Saturday in the Saudi city of Jeddah by the deputy executive director of the WFP, Carl Skau, and the general supervisor of the King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid and Relief (KSrelief) foundation, Abdullah Al Rabea.
Under this agreement, some €13 million will be allocated to maintain emergency food assistance for vulnerable families across Yemen while the remaining ten will finance specific projects in towns such as Hadramaut, Al Maharah and Socotra.
The WFP recalls that the war in Yemen has left the country’s food insecurity at its worst. Some 64 percent of families surveyed in August reported insufficient access to food, and more than half of them experienced severe food deprivation, marked by poor food consumption.
“KSrelief’s support is essential to WFP’s work in Yemen,” said Skau. “This grant will help feed more than 500,000 people while laying the foundation for long-term resilience against hunger.”
