At least one dead in demonstrations in Mozambique after the publication of the election results

MADRID 25 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least one person has died in the demonstrations that took place this Thursday in Mozambique after the official publication of the electoral results, which gave victory to Daniel Chapo, candidate of the governmental Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), with the 70.67 percent of the votes, amid accusations of electoral fraud.

The Mozambican Police have explained that a young man who was injured has lost his life on the way to the hospital, while several supporters of the opposition candidate of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Vamos), Venancio Mondlane, and a security forces agent They have received treatment after being injured.

“We have recorded cases of disturbance of order, both in Nampula and Nacala, such as burning of tires in the streets, vandalism of private vehicles, robberies on public roads, destruction of market stalls and robberies of sellers and operators of financial portfolios of mobile phones,” said Nampula Police spokesperson Dercio Samuel in statements reported by the AIM news agency.

The mobilizations have paralyzed the capital, Maputo, where security forces have charged against protesters in recent days. The NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned the attacks on journalists reporting on the protests, although the Mozambican government has denied that the press was shot at.

Mondlane explained last week that the protests are motivated by the election results, as well as the death of his lawyer, Elvino Dias, and Paulo Guambe, who were shot dead in an ambush in the center of Maputo.
