The European Parliament condemns China’s military exercises and its coercive actions against Taiwan

This Thursday, the European Parliament expressed its condemnation of China’s military practices in Taiwan, where it carries out maneuvers that simulate the blockade of the island, pointing out that Beijing’s coercive actions contravene International Law.

In a resolution, MEPs condemn China’s “unjustified” military maneuvers on October 14 and “continuous military provocations” against Taiwan, pointing out that the buildup of military forces in the area changes the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific .

“Threats or other coercive measures to achieve unification are incompatible with international law,” underlines the text approved with 432 votes in favor, 60 against and 71 abstentions.

In this sense, the European Parliament defends the ‘status quo’ in the region and rejects any unilateral change in the Taiwan Strait by the Chinese authorities, praising the restraint shown by the island. Thus, he insists that the EU will react “firmly and decisively” to any change “through force or coercion.”

It denounces that Beijing carries out systematic activities such as “cyber and disinformation campaigns” against Taiwan, and urges it to immediately end these actions that go against international law.

In this sense, the parliamentarians call on the EU to put “red lines” in the face of practices that damage the ‘status quo’ with respect to Taiwan through “its set of sanctions, including sectoral sanctions, against hybrid activities and cyber threats “.

He also rejects China’s “economic coercion” against Taiwan and other countries, ensuring that these practices “are not only illegal under World Trade Organization rules, but also have a devastating effect on China’s reputation.” That is why it defends the EU’s right to develop its relations with Taiwan in line with its shared interests and values ​​”without foreign interference.”
