Death toll from fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria rises to more than 180

MADRID 23 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Nigerian authorities have raised the death toll to more than 180 due to the explosion last week of a tanker truck loaded with fuel as it passed through the state of Jigawa, in the northeast of the African country.

The governor of Jigawa, Umar Namadi, has put the total number of deaths from the event, which took place on October 15, at 181, before adding that another 80 people are still hospitalized, so it is not ruled out that the death toll will increase. during the next few days.

Likewise, he revealed that the Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu, has promised to “intervene” and “give help” to the victims of the event, whose causes are still being investigated by the authorities, as reported by the Nigerian state news agency, NAN.

The authorities have indicated that many of the fatalities are people who approached the vehicle after its driver lost control of it and suffered an accident while passing through the town of Majiya.

The driver was covering the distance between Kano and Nguru, Yobe, when the accident occurred. The northern part of Nigeria has a high poverty rate, which encourages residents to approach these vehicles in the event of an accident, a very dangerous practice.
