This second night of violence in the streets occurs after the death of Odair Moniz, 43, who was shot by the Police in the early hours of Monday, in the Cova da Moura neighborhood, in Amadora. At least three people have been arrested as a result of the riots.
In Portugal, in the greater Lisbon region has gone through a night of unrest, with several incidents of violence and vandalism in different places such as Carnaxide (Oeiras), Casal de Cambra (Sintra) and Damaia (Amadora). In the Zambujal neighborhood, in the municipality of Amadora, a bus and several containers were set on fire.
This second night of violence in the streets occurs after the death of Odair Moniz, 43 years oldwhom the Police shot at dawn on Monday, in the Cova da Moura neighborhood, in Amadora. In a statement, the Police reported violent riots and various cases of urban violence, where at least one person was arrested “for possession of combustible material.”
In addition to monitoring the Zambujal neighborhood, the Police reinforced their presence. Early in the morning there was an attempt to set fire to a gas stationlocated near the Cova da Moura neighborhood. The incident did not cause any explosion.
During the night they also recorded Riots at Carnaxidein the municipality of Oeiras, more precisely in the Portela neighborhood, where shots were fired and a bus caught fireas well as several garbage containers and a light vehicle.
The Sintra Police stated in a statement that “will not tolerate acts of disorder and destruction carried out by criminal groups (…) and who will remain committed (…) to the security of the community”.
“These riots are unacceptable,” says the Minister of the Interior
In statements to journalists, the Minister of the Interior, Margarida Blascospoke of “unacceptable disturbances” that do not allow “communities to lead their normal lives.” Margarida Blasco reported that an emergency meeting of the Internal Security System has been organized, which remains in “permanent contact” with the security forces. At least three people were arrested as a result of the riots.
Urgent investigation and a shocked neighborhood
The Minister of Interior Administration ordered the opening of an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death of Odair Moniz. The agent who shot the man has already been charged, according to a source from the Judicial Police. Dozens of people gathered on Tuesday front of the Odair Moniz home to pay tribute to him. This 43-year-old citizen of Cape Verdean origin owned a cafeteria and was known in the neighborhood by the nickname “Dá.”
The mobilization was called by a neighborhood association of that town. “People were in disbelief with the death of Odair Moniz,” Gilberto Pinto, president of the neighborhood association of the A Partilha neighborhood, told the Lusa agency. The neighbors highlight the personality of Odair and They refuse to believe the police versionwho says he threatened them with a knife.
