There are already 4,400 Cuban migrants intercepted by the United States Coast Guard in the last year

( Spanish) — United States Border Patrol (USBP) agents detained a Cuban migrant in an inflatable kayak this Sunday in Marathon, Florida, while United States Coast Guard (USCG) officials acronym in English) report 4,440 Cubans intercepted so far this year.

On Sunday, “USBP agents assigned to the Miami sector detained a Cuban migrant after he made landfall in an inflatable kayak in Marathon,” a city in the Florida Keys, according to a tweet USBP Miami Sector Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar.

“The individual will be processed for removal proceedings,” Slosar said.

The USCG said in a tweet that crews “repatriated 203 Cubans to Cuba, this Saturday, after 14 interdictions off the Florida coast” earlier in the week.

Also this Saturday, USBP agents and their local law enforcement partners “responded to two migrant landings in the ‘Keys,'” Slosar said in a tweet. According to Slosar, there were “27 migrants coming from Cuba … placed in custody after making landfall on Long Key and the Marquesas Keys. No injuries were reported.”

Since October 1, 2021, USCG crews have intercepted 4,440 Cubans compared to previous years:

  • 5,396 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2016
  • 1,468 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2017
  • 259 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2018
  • 313 Cuban migrants in fiscal year 2019
  • 49 Cuban Migrants in Fiscal Year 2020
  • 838 Cuban Migrants in Fiscal Year 2021

The southernmost point of the United States is about 90 nautical miles from Cuba.
