( Spanish) – The former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, was sentenced this Monday to 20 years and six months in prison by a Lima court for collusion and money laundering related to the so-called Odebrecht case.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Toledo received a bribe from the Brazilian transnational company to obtain the concession for the construction of the Peru-Brazil South Interoceanic Highway Project.
The Prosecutor’s Office maintained that the Odebrecht company gave him, through a friend of the former president, more than US$30 million.
During the sentencing hearing this Monday and, regarding the accusation of collusion, the judge and director of debates for the trial, Inés Rojas Contreras, said that Toledo had failed to fulfill his duty from the Presidency.
“In this case, having demonstrated a series or a string of irregularities, an unusual interference, an acceleration of the process and the direct and indirect intervention of Mr. Toledo in the process, Mr. Toledo has carried out the typical conduct of the breach of duty. defrauding the State,” he explained
The former president denied the accusations during the process.
Roberto Su, the former president’s lawyer, said this Monday outside the court that the defense will appeal the sentence. He indicated that, in addition, they will ask the court to analyze the appeal that Toledo may receive house arrest, based on the “deterioration of his health.”
