Lula says the blow to the head was serious and that he is taking care of himself to avoid complications

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Monday that the blow to the head he suffered as a result of a fall over the weekend was serious and that he is waiting a few days for his medical team to evaluate the “damage” of the injury.

Lula said that the accident was “silly” but requires attention because it involved the head. Saturday’s fall caused two small brain hemorrhages and caused the cancellation of his trip to Russia to participate in the BRICS summit.

“I had an accident here, but (…) it was stupid on my part. It was serious, but it didn’t affect any of the most delicate parts. I’m taking care of myself because anything in the head is very strong,” he said.

“So I’m waiting, because the doctors said I have to wait at least three, four days so they know how much damage the fall caused,” the president added.

For his part, the president’s personal doctor, Roberto Kalil Filho, said that Lula should be discharged this week to take short trips.

In an interview with GloboNewsKalil said the president is unlikely to have major complications from the fall and that Lula will undergo routine examinations.

He added that Lula has been advised to avoid physical activity this week, but can have a normal work routine.

Earlier on Monday, Institutional Relations Minister Alexandre Padilha had told reporters that Lula was feeling “super well” after suffering a head injury.

Lula, 78 years old, shared in a post on X a photo of him smiling alongside Padilha and his top foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim, during a meeting on Monday.
