The Portuguese are up in arms over a luxurious new holiday resort where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly snapped up a beachfront property.
The Sussexes are said to have spent money on one of the 300 residences that will soon be built on the 722-acre site. CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club – a luxurious development near the small town of Melides, about 81 miles south of Lisbon.
The mirror reports that properties within the complex start at a whopping $4.7m (£3.6m).
Until recently, Portuguese law prohibited restricting access to public beaches, but now certain stretches of sand are considered “private,” according to the daily log, and the locals are furious.
Bradley McGuiness, a local from Melides, told the outlet that it was “the worst thing that has happened to the Portuguese coast” and a “typical situation of greed.”
“Taking land and property away from locals who have been enjoying it for years,” he fumed.
Another local expressed his dismay at the luxurious new complex, saying: “I am very upset by this huge piece of Portuguese land destroyed for the rich, away from the average citizen who had been making memories in this place for generations and generations.”
Resident Diana Queiroz added: “I have been going to this place for years, I camped there several times and because of this company this is no longer possible.”
CostaTerra is part of Discovery Land Company, a company founded by Mike Meldman, who, along with George Clooney, invested in the multimillion-dollar tequila company Casamigos.
Meghan and Harry also have a family connection to the company: Jack Brooksbank, the husband of Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie, works for Discovery Land Company in its marketing and sales department.
Brooksbank and Eugenie already divide their time between London and Portugal along with their two sons, August, three, and Ernest, sixteen months.
According to The Mirror, Discovery Land Company has been developing the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club since 2019.
The website describes the golf and ocean club as “the ideal luxury getaway for families seeking an authentic lifestyle-focused coastal residential community.”
Meanwhile, it has been reported that purchasing a holiday home in Portugal could allow Harry and Meghan to acquire a “Golden Visa”, which would grant them “visa-free access to the European Union’s Schengen area”.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not had residence in the United Kingdom since 2023, when they were asked to officially “evict” Frogmore Cottagethe home of the United Kingdom in the grounds of Windsor Castle. The couple first moved into the cabin after getting married in 2018.
