Dick Strawbridgestar of Escape to the castleHe revealed that his relationship with his wife Angel almost ended due to their 20-year age difference.
The couple met at a party in 2010, after the end of Dick’s first marriage. Despite their instant connection and the fun they had together, Dick, 65, was unsure about his future.
On the How To Be 60 podcast, he explained: “The first date I went on was with Angela, after we had been separated for six years. We had a lot of fun and it got to the point very quickly where I said, ‘We’re going to have to stop this, it’s wonderful to have a lot of fun, but you have to go and find a young man and I do all the things that young people do and I’m just going to go ahead'”.
At the time, the father of two, in his 50s, wondered if the 20-year age difference would be too much for them. “[I was] At over 50 years old, Ángela was like 20 years younger and what do we do?” he reflected.
However, it was Angel, owner of The Vintage Patisserie, now 46, who insisted they continue their relationship. She was undeterred by the age difference, and Dick, who was awarded an MBE in 1993, now credits her determination as one of the turning points in his life.
“It was a really interesting ‘whoa, okay,’” he recalled. “It probably took me less than a second to say, ‘Okay, what the hell, let’s do it,’ and that’s why I live in a castle with two lovely little boys. It doesn’t make sense. “We fit in, we work together, we are complete opposites, it is illogical for us to be together, but it works.”
Their decision to move on led them to build a life together. Dick and Angel married in 2015 and now live in the famous French chateau where they film their popular television series, Escape to the Chateau. The couple share two children, Arthur, 11, and Dorothy, 10. Despite initial misgivings, their relationship has proven to be a success.
Angel remembers that it was “love at first sight” when she met Dick and expresses that the age difference has never been a problem for her.
She also shared her affection for her husband on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, saying, “He’s passionate about life, about everything.
He is a storyteller and has a certain energy. Honestly, even now he has that aura of authority. “It makes my hair stand on end, he is a very strong and powerful man, who is also very kind and will do anything for anyone.”
Angel, known for her humor and cheeky personality, shared a funny moment from their relationship when, two years later, she marked a “get pregnant” date on the calendar, as a light-hearted nudge to Dick.
