Scamming on the Internet by posing as a pretty boy or girl who needs money is as old… well, as the Internet. Now the same scam is repeated, reinforced by deepfakes with AI, and cryptos.
Chinese police have arrested 27 members of the Sun Yee On triad, who had swindled more than 40 million euros from dozens of men in China, Taiwan, India and Singapore, according to account the local environment South China Morning Post.

SCMP explains that the gang began contacting their victims through social networks, using photos of attractive women created with AIwho also had sophisticated professions and traveled a lot. Their goal was to attract men with money.
When they made contact, several members of the group were in charge of inventing the conversations, to gain the victim’s trust.
Although the police have not specified the tools, they assure that the group had used deepfakes through artificial intelligence, to create videos and fake video calls with those women who do not exist.
Six members of this triad were recent college graduates. They programmed a fake cryptocurrency platform.
AI-generated women cajoled men into buying these cryptocurrencies that don’t exist either, with the hook that They were very profitable, and they would make a lot of money.
As these cryptocurrencies were smoke, all the money ended up in the gang’s accounts, which then disappeared without a trace.
It seems incredible that, after decades of similar scams, there are still people who meet an attractive person on the Internet who asks them for money, and do not suspect a thing. But that’s human nature.
