Work calendar 2025: holidays and long weekends in each autonomous community of Spain

The 2025 work calendar includes a total of 12 holidays, of which 9 will be celebrated jointly throughout Spainthe same number as this year, according to a resolution of the General Directorate of Labor published this Friday in the Official State Gazette (BOE). Two local holidays are added to these 12 days, for a total of 14 holidays.

Specifically, in 2025 there will be a holiday throughout Spain on Wednesday January 1 (New Year), the Monday January 6 (Epiphany of the Lord), Friday April 18 (Good Friday), the Thursday May 1 (Labor Holiday), Friday August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin), the Saturday November 1 (All Saints), the Saturday December 6 (Spanish Constitution Day), the Monday December 8 (Day of the Immaculate Conception) and the Thursday December 25 (Nativity of the Lord).

There are others common holidays that the autonomous communities can move to another day. This has happened with the Thursday April 17 (Maundy Thursday), which will be a holiday throughout Spain except in Catalonia and the Valencian Community, but not with the Friday January 6Three Kings’ Day, which all communities have decided to keep.

Among the powers recognized by the autonomous communities is also the possibility of replace the rest on the Monday following national holidays that coincide on Sunday with the incorporation of others that are traditional to themas well as the option to celebrate San José (March 19) or Santiago Apostle (July 25) in its corresponding territory.

In this way, October 13 (the Monday following the October 12 holiday) will be a holiday in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias and Castilla y León, Extremadura; Friday, July 25 (Santiago Apóstol) will only be a holiday in Galicia, Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country, and Wednesday, March 19 (San José) will only be a holiday in Murcia and the Valencian Community.

The relationship of nine festivities common to the entire country in 2025 is the following:

Two local holidays must be added to the national and regional holidays, for a total of 14 holidays per year.

A YEAR WITH SEVERAL LONG WEEKENDS

The celebration of several holidays on Monday or Friday, therefore close to Saturday and Sunday, will allow next year to have some weekends longer than usual in Spain as a whole. This is what happens with the Monday, January 6, Friday, August 15, Friday, April 18 and Monday, December 8.

In the communities that have chosen to celebrate the Maundy Thursday (April 17), which are almost all of them, except Catalonia and the Valencian Community, there will be a four-day long weekend, and in three communities (Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja) this long weekend will be five days, since they have decided to also make Easter Monday a holiday. In the BOE resolution it is specified that In Catalonia and the Valencian Community, in addition to the 12 paid and non-recoverable national holidays, a recoverable paid holiday has been establishedwhich means that if workers enjoy that extra holiday, they will have to make up the hours not worked.

In the case of the Valencian Communitythe recoverable paid holiday has been set for Tuesday June 24 (San Juan), while Catalonia must choose between January 6, April 21, June 24 and December 26.
