The EU warns that it will respond if North Korea intervenes in Ukraine and sees it as proof that Russia does not want peace

BRUSSELS Oct. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has warned this Friday that it will respond to North Korea if it intervenes in the war in Ukraine, after the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, has warned that 10,000 North Korean troops are in territory occupied by Russia and ready to fight in the conflict alongside Russian troops.

“We have taken note of reports regarding the possible involvement of North Korean troops in Ukraine. If confirmed, this would represent a significant increase in the military relationship with Russia, further defying international law, and illustrates once again that it is Russia which escalates the war and its aggression, with the active participation of its allies,” said the EU Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, in response to Europa Press.

In this sense, it emphasizes European concern about the intensification of military cooperation and arms transfers between Pyongyang and Moscow and underlines that North Korea’s continued support in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine “will receive an appropriate response” from the block.

For European diplomacy, this step would show that Russia has a dishonest position regarding sitting down to negotiate the end of the conflict and shows that it has no real interest in peace. “On the contrary, Russia desperately seeks any assistance for its illegal aggression, including from actors who are seriously disrupting global peace and security,” Stano added.

Thus, for the EU, Russia turning to Kim Jong Un’s regime reflects “the real weakness” of Moscow, “its growing isolation” and “the effectiveness of the EU’s restrictive measures against Russia.”

After meeting with the leaders of the 27 this Thursday in Brussels, Zelensky warned of the presence of North Korean soldiers in Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia, warning that their possible entry into the conflict would be “a step towards a world war.”

The Ukrainian leader alleged that his Intelligence information shows that 10,000 North Korean troops are in the territory of eastern Ukraine occupied by Russia, that they have joined the Russian Army and can intervene in the war, something that NATO does not confirm at the moment.
