Windows finally receives the official ChatGPT application. It differs from the Mac version in one key way

PC users have had to wait around five months to attend the launch of ChatGPT for Windows. The client for Mac was announced last Maybut it wasn’t until this week in October that OpenAI has launched a desktop version of its popular chatbot for the Microsoft operating system.

Now, Windows computers will continue to be one step behind those equipped with macOS. The recently released ChatGPT PC app is a “preview” that does not offer the full experience. In addition, it is only available to paid users of ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise and Edu.

ChatGPT on PC, advantages and limitations

The main advantage of having a ChatGPT desktop application is its integration with the operating system. In Windows we can press Alt + Space to invoke the chatbot in a separate window. This is an advantage that overlaps all the others and that we can adjust to our liking. We can also hide it with Alt + Space.

Both in the main window and in the one we open with the key combination we can upload files and images to enrich our conversations with ChatGPT. This version also allows us to create images with DALL·E and even provides access to the preview version o1, the OpenAI model that is capable of “reasoning”.

If we focus on the disadvantages, ChatGPT for Windows leaves out some features that are available in macOS, such as the possibility of use your voice both to enter text and to chat with the chatbot. OpenAI says which plans to release “the full experience” for everyone later this year.

As we noted above, another limitation is that the PC chatbot app is only available to users who pay for a ChatGPT subscription. This is no different than what happened with the initial release for Mac, where for a time it was also exclusive to those who went through the checkout.

This late launch does not go unnoticed if we take into account that Windows is not only the desktop operating system most used in the worldbut belongs to Microsoft, a company that has invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI. In any case, The ChatGPT app can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
