The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezhas rejected the creation of migrant holding centers outside the territory of the European Union – following the model of the agreement between the Italy of Giorgia Meloni and Albania– arguing that this formula does not serve to reduce irregular migration and does not solve any problem. In contrast to the hard line adopted by the majority of his European partners, Sánchez defended at the summit held this Thursday in Brussels a “positive view of the contribution of migration“in economic and social terms.
“We are not in favor of that type of formulas because They are formulas that do not address any of the problems and create new ones.“Sánchez stressed at a press conference at the end of the European Council. This idea has been endorsed by the president of the Commission herself, Ursula von der Leyen. “We opt for a vision much more focused on the external dimension of the migration phenomenon, that is, how we can anticipate the arrival of irregular migrants to the coasts,” he noted.
In this sense, the President of the Government has called on the European Border and Coast Guard (Frontex) to sign agreements with Senegal and Mauritania to be able to patrol in African waters and thus prevent the departure of migrants. Spain also defends increasing the money dedicated to migration policies within the EU’s multiannual budget. Finally, Sánchez has advocated bringing forward the entry into force of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum to 2025 (one year earlier than planned).
“My approach within the European Council has always been to make a positive approach to the migration phenomenon. And reinforce everything that has to do with regular migration. It is evident that if we want to face the European demographic challenge, if we want to guarantee the sustainability of our pensions and the welfare state, and also guarantee the economic growth that Spain or Europe as a whole is experiencing right now, we also need the contribution of migration.” .

The President of the Government denies that he has been left alone within the EU and highlights that Spain is one of the main promoters of the Migration Pact that the rest of the partners have signed.
“We are aware that this debate generates found positionsbut ultimately what Europe we want to be is at stake: a prosperous and therefore open Europe or a poor and therefore closed Europe. We need to face the migration phenomenon thinking about future generations and not about the next elections,” defended the President of the Government.
