The Government of the Netherlands could explore the possibility of sending asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected to Uganda, as recognized by the Minister of Foreign Trade, Reinette Klever, this Wednesday during a visit to the African country.
The project, which is still in development, is shown as the Dutch alternative to Italy’s migration plan, which has agreed with Albania to send irregular migrants. If finalized, Uganda would receive financial compensation in exchange for hosting asylum seekers.
In principle, the agreement between both parties would contemplate that African asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal avenues in the Netherlands be deported and housed in Uganda, although the countries of origin that would be included in the agreement remain to be determined.
“Ultimately, we want to reduce migration. For the Government it is important that those who have exhausted all legal remedies return to their country of origin. And that is where sometimes things get stuck,” said Klever, who in statements On radio and television, NOS has praised the good relations with Uganda.
These statements have quickly received the support of the leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), Geert Wilders, the party with the most representation in both the coalition Government and Parliament. “Fewer asylum seekers, more Netherlands,” he noted on his social networks.
The opposition has been against this initiative, which they have classified as “cheap propaganda” and “symbolic politics”, and even the liberals of Democrats 66 have recalled that other countries such as Denmark or the United Kingdom have already tried to promote this style and that finally “no one has gone to Africa.
