Mexico City-Querétaro train: what will be its route, speed, when will it be ready

( Spanish) – In mid-October, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, began preliminary work on the construction of the Mexico City-Querétaro train, a 255-kilometer railway project that will connect the country’s capital and the state of Querétaro.

The work, which will begin in April 2025, will be carried out by the military engineers who built the controversial Felipe Ángeles airport (AIFA) during the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Its construction will last three years, according to Sheinbaum, it will generate more than 490,000 jobs and benefit almost 6 million inhabitants in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Hidalgo and Querétaro.

In its first stage, this passenger train will connect the inhabitants of Mexico City with the states of Mexico, Hidalgo and Querétaro. It is expected that for later stages of the project, the train will connect with other cities such as Nuevo Laredo, Guadalajara and Nogales, located in the north and west of the country.

The route of the Mexico-Querétaro Train will travel 225 kilometers, with stops at three main stations:

  • Buenavista, in Mexico City
  • San Juan del Río, in Querétaro
  • Santiago de Querétaro (terminal station), in Querétaro

In addition to these stations, there will be stops in intermediate towns. The route will cross the mayorships and municipalities of Cuauhtémoc, Azcapotzalco, Atotonilco de Tula, Tula de Allende, Nopala de Villagrán, Tepeji del Río de Ocampo, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Polotitlán, Cuautitlán, Soyaniquilpan de Juárez, Tlalnepantla de Baz, Tultitlán, Zumpango, Huehuetoca , Teoloyucan, Jilotepec, Coyotepec, Pedro Escobedo, Querétaro, San Juan del Río, El Marqués and Colón.

In Mexico City, the Mexico-Querétaro train will have an intermodal connection at the Buenavista terminal with Metro Line B, Metrobús lines 1, 3 and 4 and the Ecobici system. At the Querétaro terminal you will have connection with the Querétaro Bus.

The Mexico-Querétaro train will have two exclusive tracks for passengers, in addition to the existing cargo tracks, as detailed by the government on its official website. In addition, several works will be added to the project: 77 bridges, 12 tunnels, three viaducts, two bypasses and two railway distributors.

The train will travel through Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Hidalgo and Querétaro in 1 hour 40 minutes, a 40% saving in travel time that is currently approximately 3 hours.

Its fleet of trains will have a speed of up to 160 km/h and each train will have a capacity of 450 passengers.

Before starting construction, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) will carry out various studies on the current right of way to determine the design parameters, according to Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, commander of the ‘Felipe Ángeles’ Group of Engineers.

Once the studies have been completed, which will last five months, Vallejo Suárez assures that a construction time of 36 months is contemplated starting in March 2025. It is expected that the work and operational tests will be carried out in the first quarter of 2029.
