Scholz will meet with Trudeau to intensify energy cooperation with Canada

BERLIN, Aug. 21 (DPA/EP) –

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Canada to meet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with the aim of intensifying energy cooperation between the two nations in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a first stop, Scholz, accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Climate Protection, Robert Habeck, will meet with Trudeau in Montreal to discuss political, economic and military support for Ukraine in the framework of the Russian invasion, as well as relations with China or measures to face the energy crisis.

Later, the German chancellor will attend an economic conference together with a delegation of businessmen. On his last stop, he will visit Stephenville, Newfoundland, to learn about the development of hydrogen technologies and supply chains. Both nations are expected to sign an agreement in this area.

“The chancellor’s visit to Canada is an important signal for the German economy, which is closely interconnected internationally,” said Peter Adrian, president of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK).

In this sense, he pointed out that German foreign trade is facing great challenges due to problems in supply chains and the reorganization of sales markets and sources of supply due to the war in Ukraine.
