Preliminary results point to a victory for Chapo, who aspires to succeed Nyusi at the head of the African country
Oct. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The government party of Mozambique, the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), has won in the capital, Maputo, in the presidential and general elections, according to the electoral commission, a boost to the aspirations of the candidate of the formation, Daniel Chapo, to succeed Filipe Nyusi at the head of the African country.
The electoral commission has indicated that Frelimo has won in all the districts of the city, where it has obtained more than 57.7 percent of the votes in the parliamentary elections, with Chapo leading the vote in the presidential elections with nearly 53 percent. .7 percent of the ballots.
Behind Chapo is Venancio Mondlane, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Vamos) and who has received about 33.8 percent of the support. The candidate proclaimed himself the winner last week, although the electoral commission demanded to avoid this type of pronouncement until the official announcement of the results.
In third place is the candidate of the opposition Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Ossufo Momade, with 9.6 percent of the votes, while in fourth and last place is Lutero Simango, of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), with 2.9 percent of the votes in the capital. The four main parties have been in this same order in the count in the parliamentary elections in Maputo.
The preliminary results of the electoral commission for the capital have been replicated in other areas of the country, given that Chapo has close to 70 percent of support in 30 of the country’s 154 districts, according to the partial count. A candidate needs to collect more than 50 percent of the votes to be declared president-elect without the need for a second round.
These data give Mondlane about 23 percent of the votes, as reported by the Bloomberg news agency. The electoral authorities have until this Monday to announce the provincial results and until October 24 to reveal the final results at the national level.
Chapo, 47, is the first candidate presented by Frelimo that was born after the war against the former metropolis, Portugal, which led to the country’s independence in 1975 at the hands of the party, founded in 1962 by Eduardo Mondlane as Marxist nationalist movement against the authoritarian regime in the then colony.
The four candidates have put the fight against insecurity among their priorities, given that the security forces have been facing an increase in insurgency operations in Cabo Delgado (north) since 2017, a situation capitalized by the jihadist group Islamic State to expand its influence in the area.
On the other hand, among the main problems facing the country, apart from jihadist violence in the north, are the economic crisis and the impact of a serious corruption scandal that broke out in 2016 and affected several former senior Mozambican charges, as well as climate change, including phenomena such as the drought caused by ‘El NiƱo’ and several cyclones that have devastated part of the Mozambican territory in recent years.
