MADRID 14 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
This Monday morning, the Chinese Army began a series of military maneuvers around the island of Taiwan in which they will simulate the blockade of its ports and assault against maritime and land targets, among other actions, just a few days after The Taiwanese president, Lai Ching Te, emphasizes that his “mission” as president is to “resist annexation” by Beijing.
“With ships and aircraft approaching the island of Taiwan from different directions, multi-service troops are participating in joint exercises, focusing on topics of sea-air combat readiness patrol, blockade of ports and key areas, assault on maritime targets and as well as the joint seizure of comprehensive superiority,” said the spokesman for the Eastern Operations Command, Li Xi.
The exercises, baptized as ‘Joint Sword-2024B’, aim to test their military capabilities and serve as a “severe warning to separatist acts” on the island, considered by Beijing as a rebel province but under its sovereignty, and which is a “legitimate and necessary” operation to “safeguard national unity.”
For its part, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has condemned the start of the exercises on its social network in response.
From Beijing, the Chinese authorities have reiterated on numerous occasions that Taiwan’s independence will not be tolerated and that they will not rule out the use of force to prevent secession. Ties between China and the island of Taiwan, which it considers another province under its sovereignty, were severed in 1949, after the forces of the nationalist Kuomintang party suffered defeat in the civil war against the Communist Party and moved to the archipelago. Relations were reestablished only at a business and informal level in the late 1980s.
