Qatar joins in condemning Israel for confiscating the UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem

MADRID 13 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Qatar has “strongly” condemned this Saturday the confiscation by Israel of the land where the headquarters of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is located in East Jerusalem, accusing the Jewish State of wanting to “liquidate” the Palestinian refugees’ right to return.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denounced the “occupation” of the UNRWA headquarters as part of a “systematic campaign” by the Israeli authorities to “settle the issue of Palestinian refugees and their right to return to their homes”, recalling that the The right to return is included in International Law.

These words come after the Palestinian Authority has condemned the Israeli confiscation of the headquarters of this UN Agency in East Jerusalem, to convert it into an “advanced settlement containing 1,440 housing units.”

In a statement, the Qatari Ministry has accused Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of seeking to “dismantle” the UN Agency and “deprive millions of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria of their essential services.” .

This measure by the Jewish State constitutes “one more link in a chain of reprehensible attacks against the United Nations itself,” which includes attacks on its workers. “This dangerous situation places the international community before a true test, which requires immediate action to confront it firmly,” reads the note issued by the Qatari authorities.

The Government has reiterated its “full support” for UNRWA, in line with its “firm” defense of the rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of “their independent State within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, of which the State of Qatar is a member, condemned Israel’s decision on Thursday as a “serious violation of international conventions.”
