Sánchez urges the European Commission to review the pacts with Israel “if it finds that it does not respect human rights”

The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezthis Friday asked the European Commission to be “coherent” and verify that if Israel does not respect international law and human rights on which the association agreement with the European Union (EU) is based, “There is only one way: review that agreement”.

“The agreements must be fulfilled in their letter and spirit and that is the basis of our credibility before the world,” Sánchez said in a statement in Paphos, Cyprus, where the leaders of the Mediterranean countries of the region have met. European Union (EU) to address immigration and war in the Middle East.

Sánchez recalled that he sent a letter with this request in February to the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyensigned together with the Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, and has insisted on the need to act: “Let’s be consistent.”

Sánchez has been blunt with Israel, calling the attack by Jewish troops against the headquarters of the FINUL in Lebanon, where a total of four blue helmets have been injured by the offensives this Thursday and Friday. All the Spanish soldiers assigned to the peace mission in Lebanon, about 650they are fine.

Sánchez, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have signed a joint statement expressing their outrage at Israel’s attacks on UN positions in southern Lebanon.

The President of the Government has demanded Israel the “cessation of all types of violence that the blue helmets are unfortunately suffering” and has called for “recovering diplomacy and dialogue” to put an end to the “cycle of violence.”

“No just and lasting international order can be lifted by shrapnel and cannon shots,” declared Sánchez.

Envío de armas

También ha pedido a la comunidad internacional la suspensión del envío de armas a Israel, como hizo Macron la semana pasada.

“España no vende armas desde el inicio de la guerra. Sin armas, no hay guerra”, ha señalado Sánchez. 

Macron también ha condenado la ofensiva de Israel contra soldados de la ONU y ha pedido explicaciones a Tel Aviv. España, Francia e Italia han convocado a los máximos representantes de Israel en sus países para pedir explicaciones por los actos de las tropas de Netanyahu. 

El mandatario español ha vuelto a recordar que ya son más de 40.000 muertos en Gaza y Líbano, por los ataques israelíes, según las autoridades locales, y más de tres millones de desplazados. 

En este contexto, ha considerado que en el próximo Consejo Europeo la UE debe exigir un alto el fuego inmediato en Gaza y Líbano; el cese de la violencia en Cisjordania; y la liberación de todos los rehenes en manos del grupo terrorista Hamás.

Igualmente ha insistido en la “solución de dos Estados”, uno israelí y otro palestino, y la celebración de una conferencia de paz.

“No va haber paz duradera sin atajar las causas profundas del conflicto”, ha recordado. 

Finalmente ha hecho un llamamiento a la comunidad internacional. “No podemos ni debemos quedarnos de brazos cruzados. Hacerlo sería políticamente imperdonable y moralmente rechazable. Sería poner en cuestión el Derecho Internacional humanitario”, ha concluido.
