At least eleven people have been killed and eight injured in the far north-west of Pakistan as a result of a series of shootings that occurred during a new territorial dispute in the state of Khyber-Pakhtunkhua, on the border with Afghanistan.
As has happened in previous months (and years), the incidents have occurred in the municipality of Kurram, where the deputy commissioner, Javidulá Mehsud, has confirmed to the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’ a series of shooting confrontations between rival communities in the mountains of Kunj Alizai, near the border.
Three of the injured, medical sources have indicated to the same media, are in critical condition, while the Police have installed checkpoints at the entrances and exits of the region to restore calm.
It may be recalled that Kurram was the scene of a wave of violence last month that left at least 46 dead and 91 injured, which followed another outbreak of clashes in July that left 49 dead.
The region has a long history of community violence, which is exacerbated by the struggle for control of land and its very scarce water resources. The opposing parties even use mortar and rocket fire, according to information collected by local media.
The efforts initiated in September by a local assembly of notables, and those carried out by the brand new commission for the land dispute created a few weeks ago by the state government, have so far not had the expected result.
