The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, called on the Spanish authorities this Friday to take advantage of this October 12, the date on which Hispanic Heritage Day is celebrated, to apologize to the indigenous peoples of Mexico and apologize “as they have done other presidents and rulers from different parts of the world”.

Thus, Sheinbaum later gave way to a video with which, he says, he tries to encourage the Spanish Government to join other countries in the world that have apologized to other nations for their colonial past or for crimes committed in the past. . “Let’s see if tomorrow we are encouraged to start this public apology process,” said Sheinbaum.
The aforementioned video shows images of international leaders in other nations during acts of apology for the crimes and barbarities committed in the past. “Offering an apology for crimes against humanity is a historical responsibility, a way of seeking reconciliation and overcoming past grievances. Doing so exalts those who admit the damage done to other peoples or nations,” says a voice-over in the video.
The file refers to Japan’s public apologies for its abuses in Korea and China; the forgiveness offered by Germany to Poland for the Holocaust; the public apologies of Italy, France or the Netherlands to Libya, Algeria and Indonesia, respectively, for their crimes during the colonial period.
Finally, the video recalls that former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked for forgiveness years ago from the Mayan and Yaki peoples, as well as from the Chinese community in the country, for “acts of violence and discrimination.” “These examples confirm that offering apologies for past grievances allows us to resolve historical wounds and frees both those who offer forgiveness and those who grant it.”
With these statements and the video published by the Government, Mexico insists on its criticism of Spain and continues to demand that it apologize to the native peoples of the North American nation. The situation between both countries is such that Sheinbaum left King Felipe VI out of his investiture ceremony at the beginning of the month.
